The two villages of Apano Kria and Kato Kria are 700m apart and to be found 24 - 25 kms from Sitia on the Piskokefalo - Paraspori - Kria road. The village owes its name ("Kria" means "cold") to its cooling springs and excessive cold in the winter. The villages have a long history and unfortunately have few inhabitants today. They are at a height of 550 - 600 m and provide a respite from the summer heat. The ruins of the Venetian fortress "Monte Forte", dated 13th - 14th century, can be found on the hill of Ai Yianni
